Here, Kings and Emperors delight in using their power for their own benefit and amusement.
Barbarians roam the plains, and the mountainmen don't (I repeat: DON'T) like trespassers on their mountains.
Citydwellers, the ravagers, filling the sky with black smoke and pollutes the rivers with poisonous liquids in their endless hunt for gold and precious stones. Not to mention the blastpowder..

Have you got the balls to survive in a fantasy gone bad?
Of course, some are nice people.
But nice people don't live long if they can't be as mean and rotten as the bad guys.
If this is to grim and dark for you, try the Forgotten Realms.

Of course the cliches have survived in some places (my players would send around invitations for a neck-tie party if I didn't give them "some" high fantasy.) but I don't think that being a peasant in Europe in the Middle Ages were much fun, and I'll bet that the lords weren't any smarter than todays politicians, so....
